Conflict Resolution 101 for Couples: The Best Way to Resolve Conflicts

As a young person, you probably had lots of dreams and thoughts about how you wanted your relationship or marriage to go. You must have thought about all the laughter, smiles, joy and love both of you would share. But for some strange reason we hardly ever think about the inevitable conflicts couples experience, or how such conflicts should be resolved, or more importantly how to say ‘I am sorry’ and move on.

Relationships ideally involve two people with different ideas, and backgrounds coming together to act as one. That defines the following equation:

2 different people + Different Ideas + Different Backgrounds = Occasional Conflicts

Conflicts are therefore a normal part of all relationships, but how conflicts are handled and resolved is what differentiates good relationships from devastating relationships.

So what is the best way to resolve conflict?

Immediately or as at least as soon as possible!

Once you sense that you and your partner are about to get into a fight over an issue, then it is time to change the topic! If it’s too late and both of you have already gotten into a fight, then give each other some space and time to reflect on what just happened. This is the best response, as prolonging fights only makes both of you say things you would latter wish you had never said and unfortunately cannot be taken back.

Once tempers have cooled down, you can then restart the conversation from a different angle. Come to an agreement that each partner must listen to every word the other has to say without interrupting and with a view to understanding the other person’s point of view. Then continue the conversations until both of you are willing to shift ground enough to agree on a resolution that suits you both.

This was a very hot topic at a recent marriage seminar I attended.

The debate started when one of the attendees complained that her hubby, never talks to her during sex. These were her words: 'All he does is to make those annoying sounds I like talking when I am having sex, and just one more month of this silent sex rounds would simply drive me crazy.'

Suddenly there was a burst of noise in the room. Everyone had something to say, and they were all saying it at the same time. The organizers finally got some order into the room, and everyone took turns to make their comments.

Many couples have money problems. These challenges do not necessarily arise as a result of lack of money, because it exists between rich, poor and even middle class couples. Financial problem mostly arises as a result of the differences in the way individuals view money, and the way a person views money determines how that person thinks money should be used. 4. In abundant supply – As you might have already guessed, this folks are at the other end of the ‘limited supply’ thinkers. They believe there is more than enough to go round and they give freely to friends and strangers, sometimes without even knowing when they would get the next inflow of cash.

There are individuals whose view are a combination of two or more of those listed above, or whose view do not reach the listed extremes . There are actually as many views of money as there are people, but I have tried to list the most common views of money.

The key to financial peace in your relationship is for each individual to locate and acknowledge his/her view of money. The couple then needs to define a new or combined view, and set financial goals to stay on track. You could even enlist the services of a financial adviser if needed.

So there’s this girl you secretly like. You’ll give anything to get to know are better, but you don’t even have the slightest idea on where to start. Well this article will reveal to you exactly where to start.

The first step would be to work on yourself – from the inside

Working on the inside:

- Determine for sure that you like this girl and that you truly want to get to know her better. There is no point leading her on if you don’t want her.

- Are you ready to start dating? A one-day-date doesn’t require much commitment to keep to. But if you are going into this for the long run, you need to ask yourself if you are ready for the time and money commitment involved.

- Determine what you’ll say to her. How do you ask her on the date? If you are already pretty good friends with her, you could ask her to the movies, or to some event you know she’ll enjoy being at. If you barely know her, you might want to start with introducing yourself first, then ‘crossing her path’ two to three more times before causally asking her to the movies or some other date. I know some might argue that there’s no 100% guaranteed way to tell if a girl likes you, but I assure you, by the time you’re done reading this article you’ll have a pretty accurate prediction.

Okay, the way this test works is that I’ll give you some points and your responses to my points would give you a great view as to weather a girl is crazy about you or would just like to be friends or perhaps neither.

So answer true of false to each point, and your cumulative response is the verdict.

Availability: Does she constantly make herself available even when its not convenient for her?

Nobody really likes to be inconvenienced except its for someone they care about. Would she gladly wait behind long after work just to see you, or 'escape' in the middle of a family event just to hang out with you? Then those are definite signs that she likes you. If you are the one making all the efforts to see her, and she keeps brushing you off, then that's a negative sign.

Physical Contact: Does she cease every opportunity to make body contact with you, even if it's just a touch?

Does she greet you with a hug? Does she continually touch you during conversations? Does she try to hold your hands or waist when both of you are walking? Does she make an effort to sit next to you in gatherings? All such actions are pointers to how a girl feels about you.

Body Language: Does she exhibit flirtatious behavior around you?

Women speak a lot with their bodies. To determine if a woman likes you or can't stand your guts, just watch her body language closely, it's hard to miss. A small note here, some ladies are naturally shy, and wouldn't want you show any physical signs that they like you, but you can still detect body signals if you watch closely enough.

Conversation: Is she always ready to make interesting conversation with you?

Effective communication gives a feeling of closeness. A girl who likes you would frequently make effort to have interesting conversations with you, most of which she would initiate. Does she try to draw your attention to new things about her? A woman coming up to you to ask if you like her new dress, is telling you that she doesn't mind your attention. Also when you tell her you like something new about her, does she make an effort to maintain it?

Warm and Welcoming: Is she always nice and warm towards you?

Although this attribute alone cannot be used as a determinant, because an ordinary female friend could also be nice to you. But in when you view it against the others it becomes a powerful determinant. Does she beckon to you in a crowded room? Does she make extra effort to be good to you? Does she smile a lot when you’re around? These are all signs to watch out for.

Your interests: Does she show interest in you?

A lady who likes you would always want to know your likes and dislikes, and would normally try to lead conversations in that direction. She would also want to know things like the kind of woman you like, your favorite food, your favorite place to hang out, and off course your future plans and goals. A lady who never or seldom asks you any personal questions, is probably not interested in knowing you on a personal level. So watch out.

Readiness to introduce: Is she always eager to introduce you to her family and friends?

A lady who likes you would always want you to meet with every one who is important to her. She would want you to join in on a family dinner, or invite you as an escort to her best friend's wedding. On many occasions she would even give you a feedback on what her people thought about you.

Sharing Experiences: Are you the first person she'd love to hear from?

Are you one of the top 3 people she calls when she's got good news? Does she show great displeasure when you don't call early enough to congratulate her on a recent success? Is she one of the first to congratulate you when you succeed? If your answer to this is, true, then your pretty high up on her relevance chart.

Consistency: Does she consistently show the all the signs listed above?

If a lady is all over you for just few days, or a certain period, and then stops suddenly, be careful! She might have been going through some emotional issues during that period; maybe she's gotten over it now. If she's on and off, that's also a bad sign, but if she's consistent, then that's definitely a great sign.

Now score yourself 10 for every True and 0 for every False and 5 for in betweens and add to get your overall score.

Interpretation of your scores:

If you've got a score between 90 and 110, then you've got yourself a 'catch', a lady that is crazy about you.

A score between 50 and 90, means the girl likes you, and with a little work on your part, you can turn her likeness into a hot passion.

Open Communication & Transparency

It’s common for newly weds to want to share and talk about everything. But as time goes by couples may drift apart if they do not determine to keep the communication channel open.

During dispute, each partner should learn the best way to talk to the other, and each should also give the other a fair chance to have his/her say, then both can work toward a common ground. Always seek for a WIN-WIN solution so that neither feels cheated or violated.
